Golf Cart Traffic Law FAQs for Florida

Florida is known for its gorgeous climate all year round, which makes it the perfect spot for a number of outdoor activities. Given the ease and accessibility of golf carts, they’ve become a popular choice for many residents and tourists hoping to enjoy the many amusements Florida has to offer, including amusement parks and other community spaces.

But while golf carts are incredibly common in Florida, there are traffic laws to monitor their usage. It’s best to stay updated about these regulations to ensure you don’t violate them.

How Old Do You Need to Be?

So technically, according to the law in Florida, an LSV or a low-speed-vehicle can only be driven by a person with a valid driver’s license. But an LSV is defined as a 4-wheeled vehicle with a top speed of greater than 20 mph but less than 25 mph.

However, you can very easily find a golf cart that has a top speed of 20 mph, in which case these can be driven by teenagers over 14 years of age.

Where Can You Drive Them?

Well, an LSV can be driven on any road where the speed limit is 35 mph. But as established earlier, some golf carts may not fall in this category. Therefore, most golf carts can essentially be operated within neighborhoods or on roads with golf cart lanes and a speed limit of 30 mph or less.

Additionally, they can be driven on country roads in case it intersects a roadway approved for golf carts or a golf course, or a mobile home park. However, make sure there are signs posted on the county road that signify golf carts sharing the road.

Can I Get A Ticket While Driving My Golf Cart?

The answer to this question is a big YES. Since there are traffic laws guarding the usage of golf carts, there are repercussions when these laws are violated. So, for instance, you could get a ticket for over-speeding, driving on unauthorized roads, or even if you’re drunk driving.

But overall, driving a golf cart in Florida is a pretty excellent option, and the laws aren’t as strict as some of the other states, which is why if you’re considering buying a golf cart, you go should totally go for it!
